5 misconceptions about earning money online

There are many misconceptions about online businesses that keep people from giving it a shot. The truth of the matter is, anyone can make money online, but the actual process to do so takes work and effort. 

Here are five common misconceptions about earning money online and what you should know about them before doing anything else to earn money online.

1) I have to spend my life in front of a computer

This may have been true at one point, but now there are many ways to earn a living working from home. With so many different options available, you can pick and choose which jobs best suit your personal preferences, skills, and lifestyle. Some are more passive than others, allowing you to set your own hours while still making an income or even a full-time salary.  Others require more time spent actively managing your business. The important thing is that each job on its own will give you just as much (or as little) time freedom as any other job in any other industry. But all of them have one thing in common: They’re all better than sitting in a cubicle for eight hours a day!

2) I have to be an expert in SEO

Search engine optimization, or SEO, is a process by which you increase traffic to your website through targeted content on various websites. In other words, it’s about getting your company to rank high in search engines for related keywords. There’s one major problem with that: You don’t have to be an expert to get results from SEO. With just a little time and effort, anyone can optimize their website for search engines and drive new visitors toward their business. Don’t believe me? 3) I can’t start until I have a large following

It’s probably safe to say that having a large audience would help you earn more (who wouldn’t want to have 100,000 Twitter followers or 2 million Facebook fans?), but in reality, it isn’t necessary. You can still make money online with a small number of viewers and if you have an active community for your products. It all depends on what kind of business model you pursue as a blogger. Just be aware that there is an ideal subscriber size for each monetization strategy; if your content targets teens, you might want 10K+ subscribers, but if you write content for new parents or retirees, 5K is more than enough. The same goes for social media followers. The bottom line: Think about who your target market is and aim for that amount of people first. Then, once you reach that goal, start thinking about how to grow from there.

The Internet doesn’t pay well: This one couldn’t be further from the truth! If you know where to look, opportunities abound—even those who are just starting out can make decent money doing freelance work or writing sponsored posts on their blogs. It takes time and effort, but again—if you know where to look—you will find them! Even better? You don’t need a big following or even any experience at all! Most platforms offer free tutorials on how to get started so anyone can do it!

4) If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is

Free money isn’t, and you should always be wary of any opportunity that seems too good to be true. There are a lot of get rich quick schemes out there, but most of them won’t work. They’re often scams designed to separate you from your hard-earned cash. Whenever something sounds too good to be true, do some research and verify that it’s legitimate before you invest any time or energy in it. Remember: When something is free, you’re probably not its primary customer. 

The best way to make money online is by offering something valuable—like an ebook, course, tool or service—and then charging for it. You can use advertising as a source of revenue if you like, but keep in mind that ad income will likely never exceed more than 10% of your total business revenue. Your goal should be to make enough profit off each product so that if someone asks how much they cost, you can say it costs what it’s worth. If someone doesn’t want to pay for what you offer because they think they can find it for free elsewhere (or on their own), then don’t worry about trying to convince them otherwise. Chances are they’ll come back when they realize how much better your version really is!

5) No one will pay me to write content on my blog

Of course, if you’re just getting started on your career as a writer, you may not be able to attract any paying clients. And that’s okay! Start out by posting content for free and learning as much as you can about how to write great content and earn good money from it. Once you’ve grown your skills, an audience, and have built some reputation online, you will have a strong foundation to turn down offers to write unpaid pieces in exchange for experience or exposure. That will put you in position to earn more—and charge more—for your work. All good things take time! 

Another common misconception is that you need to build up a large following before anyone will pay you anything at all. In reality, there are plenty of opportunities even when starting with very little readership of your own. For example, most paid writing jobs require only enough traffic so that each piece gets read by 10-20 people at least (e.g., 2000-4000 unique visitors per month). This means you don’t necessarily need to rack up hundreds of thousands of pageviews before pitching a client – something most newer writers find quite challenging anyway!


Although it can be easy to get caught up in all of the hype that surrounds internet marketing, it’s important to realize that building a sustainable business takes hard work and dedication. It also takes perseverance. Make sure you’re not wasting your time on internet marketing tactics that don’t align with your goals and values. Ask yourself: is this something I really believe in? Or am I just trying to make a quick buck? That may seem like an easy question to answer at first, but once you start reaching out and establishing relationships, you’ll have more opportunities than ever before—opportunities that could make you tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.
