Mobile web traffic is now at its highest; for example, statistics from e-commerce shops show that they account for about 56.2%. It is a massive win against desktop users at 34.5%, even though they have a higher conversion rate than mobile users. It shows that there is a vast potential from mobile users to convert the traffic into monetary value. Therefore, your website should be mobile-friendly as it is a huge traffic source. Users are keen on using their mobile devices to browse, even though they opt for larger devices like desktops and tablets for actual purchasing. It does not take away the need to make your website mobile-friendly as it is still valuable traffic that can convert a good amount of sales.

Different manufacturers have their methods of selecting screen sizes, for example, price or performance. A responsive web design does not have a fixed interface size; hence, it automatically adjusts to the screen size demands. A user can therefore navigate, zoom and pan in a website without any issues. Since mobile traffic is more likely to be higher, it is a worthy investment to stick to the responsive web design. There are two ways to achieve a responsive web design including;

·         Progressive advancement

·         Graceful degradation

Progressive advancement– is designing a website to fit smaller devices first before the bigger ones. The initial step is to add the minimal features and functions before adding the higher-level effects and interactions for bigger gadgets like PCs and tablets. The basic version will work well with smaller devices, and the advanced version is suitable for big devices.

Graceful degradation– is the opposite of progressive advancement as it starts with creating the high-level version of the website. The next step is to minimize some contents and functions which optimize the website for mobile devices.

Progressive advancement is the better of the two, as it smoothens the development process. Using graceful degradation can create a complex website that may be difficult to adapt for mobile devices. It is because developers might focus on completing the most complex functionalities without considering whether they will work on smaller devices. Minimizing the features might make the website less functional as it should be.
